Curriculum
Dear Parents/ Guardians,
Welcome to Oak! We are a class of Year 6 students and we love learning. Our days start with fluent in 5' in Maths and silent reading, followed by our morning prayer.
Maths - In autumn term 2 we are learning fractions (the four operations and fractions of numbers) and measurements. As always, problem solving and reasoning is part of the learning. We will keep practising our times tables on timestables.co.uk too.
PE – This half term we are learning dance and gymnastics. Our flexibility and creativity will be extra useful this term!
Reading – All of Oak are on the Accelerated Reading Programme and are busily reading and quizzing their books. We should be reading at least 5 times a week for 30 minutes. Reading regularly is the best way to improve our reading speed and fluency so we can meet our reading targets each half term. We are learning Reading comprehension for 2 sessions a week where we are taught to answer retrieval and inferring questions which supports our critical thinking.
English – In English, we learn using Talk 4 Writing and Texts That Teach. We are currently focusing on story writing based on the book 'Wallace and Gromit'. The skills we are focusing on are: expanded noun phrases, colons and formal/ informal speech. Next we will venture into story-writing with Varjak Paw and non-fiction writing with Animalium.
History/ Geography - This half-term, we are being Historians as we are learning about the Vikings. We are yet to decide if they were indeed vicious!
Science - As scientists, we are learning about the solar system, night and day and the different phases of the moon.
RE - This half term we are learning about Advent and being ready for the Christmas miracle.
Art & DT - We are exploring DT this half term and more specifically circuits. We need our Science minds switched on for this!
Music - In music we are getting ready for our Christmas carols service so a lot of singing is taking place!
Spanish - We are carrying on with our journey through the Spanish language practising the names of pets and how we can ask other people about them. We are adding more information to our introductions in Spanish!
Even though we are busy learning, we would be more than happy to let you know about our latest news.
Best wishes,
Maria Kalliora

READING
The reading test is a single paper with questions based on three passages of text. Your child will have one hour, including reading time, to complete the test.
There will be a selection of question types, including:
- Ranking/ordering, e.g. ‘Number the events below to show the order in which they happen in the story’
- Labelling, e.g. ‘Label the text to show the title of the story’
- Find and copy, e.g. ‘Find and copy one word that suggests what the weather is like in the story’
- Short constructed response, e.g. ‘What does the bear eat?’
- Open-ended response, e.g. ‘Look at the sentence that begins Once upon a time. How does the writer increase the tension throughout this paragraph? Explain fully, referring to the text in your answer.’
GRAMMAR
The grammar, punctuation and spelling test consists of two parts: a grammar and punctuation paper requiring short answers, lasting 45 minutes, and a spelling test of 20 words, lasting around 15 minutes.
The grammar and punctuation test will include two sub-types of questions:
- Selected response, e.g. ‘Identify the adjectives in the sentence below’
- Constructed response, e.g. ‘Correct/complete/rewrite the sentence below,’ or, ‘The sentence below has an apostrophe missing. Explain why it needs an apostrophe.’
MATHS
Children sit three papers in maths:
- Paper 1: arithmetic, 30 minutes
- Papers 2 and 3: reasoning, 40 minutes per paper
Paper 1 will consist of fixed response questions, where children have to give the correct answer to calculations, including long multiplication and division. Papers 2 and 3 will involve a number of question types, including:
- Multiple choice
- True or false
- Constrained questions, e.g. giving the answer to a calculation, drawing a shape or completing a table or chart
- Less constrained questions, where children will have to explain their approach for solving a problem
