Hello and welcome to Maple Class!
Your teachers this year are: Mrs Yeandle and Miss Shea. Mrs Veen (Maternity leave). Your teaching assistants are: Mrs Muchmore, Mrs Pearce and Mrs Eva.
As mathematicians, Year 1's second half of Autumn term will look at number and subtraction and addition within 10. They will then move onto recognising and naming 3D shapes as well as shape patterns. Year 2 will build on their prior knowledge of number now focussing on numbers to 100 focussing on addition and subtraction. They will also have a unit looking at the properties of 3D shapes. This is delivered using the Power Maths WRM scheme. We also practice our arithmetic skills daily through 'Fluent in Five'. You can help your child at home by completing the weekly homework tasks on School Jam and practising their skills on the One Minute Maths app or timestables.co.uk.
This half-term, Year 2 will focus their English learning around the book "Fatou Fetch the water" where they will practise writing their own version of the story, following the story pattern, using commas to write a list. Next we will move onto the text "How to catch Santa" to produce a story focussing on statements and commands. They will continue to follow the No Nonsense spelling programme. The Year 1s will continue to learn phonics with Fred Frog and practice writing skills through different story books as part of Read, Write Inc.
This half-term we are being Historians looking at changes in living memory. We will look at how schools, shops and houses have all changed. We have invited Grandparents to come and tell us about their experiences.
As scientists, children will be exploring the topic 'Material'. In this topic, children will investigate the properties of different materials and look at how suitable they are for different objects. e.g. a boat, curtains.
In RE, we will begin by Belonging, Baptism and Confirmation. We will look at how we all belong to groups, school, our families and God's family, We will learn more about the first sacrament of baptism. Secondly we will move on to our "Waiting" unit looking at the season of advent as well as preparing for our Nativity at the end of term.
Maple will be continuing to practice logging on and successfully completing their School Jam online maths games.
In Design and Technology we will be looking at healthy eating and exploring lots of different fruit and vegetables. In this unit children have an opportunity to taste test in preparation for creating their own tasty and healthy smoothies.
In PSHE and RHE we are looking at Celebrating Difference. Firstly, we will look at boys and girls and how they are similar and different. We will begin to explore bullying and why it happens and how we can stand up for ourselves and others. We will finish by celebrating ourselves as individuals and knowing we can all still be friends regardless of differences.
In Music this half term, Maple are preparing for their Nativity play which will take place during the last week of term before Christmas. They will join with Acorns to tell the story of the first Christmas through singing, dancing and acting.
